Oncology: The Leading Cause of Death

Medicine has seen an enormous growth thanks to science and technology. The processes that were unimaginable a few years back are now helping cure a lot of fatal diseases. A lot has been achieved through science though we have not achieved everything yet. Cancer is one such disease which can lead to fatal consequences in some cases. Let’s find out what is it that makes cancer a common disease and a leading source of death in the developing as well as the developed countries.

Oncology: Definition

The process of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer cells is known as Oncology. This is done through three processes: Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology or Radiation Oncology.
Medical Oncology in oncology that deals with treatment through therapy- chemotherapy, etc.
Surgical Oncology treats cancer cells through surgery while Radiation Oncology does the same via radiation.

What is cancer?

Cancer is the abnormal growth of body cells. A lot of muscular cells forms a human body. These cells exist to perform a function during which they mature and then die. The disturbance in this process it can lead to unprecedented cell growth which in turn can cause cancer.

The Scope of Oncology-

According to statistics.com “The top five cancers in men and women account for 47.2% of all cancers; these cancers can be prevented, screened for and/or detected early and treated at an early stage”. This is only possible when we have enough oncologists. We all have at least one acquaintance, a friend or a family member who has been diagnosed with the disease. With such reports, we can gather the need for oncologists presently.

An Oncologist takes home 60-80K per month in the beginning which can later go up to 2 lakh per month.
