Nuclear medicine is a highly multi-disciplinary specialty that develops and uses instrumentation and radiopharmaceuticals to study physiological processes and non-invasively diagnose.

Nuclear medicine radiologists also called nuclear radiologists are physicians who use radioactive materials called radio-pharmaceuticals, to diagnose and treat disease. They employ such techniques as scintigraphy which uses radiopharmaceuticals to produce images of the body’s organs or to visualize certain diseases.

Currently, India has 234 nuclear medicine centers and 20-30 new nuclear medicine facilities are added every year. Due to its rapid growth in last decade, there is the shortage of trained manpower in the field,” says Dr. Anshu Rajnish Sharma, President, Society of Nuclear Medicine India. Its technologists are one of the highest demand professionals in India and abroad.

General prerequisites depend on the type of program offered but typically include a background in science and mathematics and an interest in working with patients. Programs available include:

•    Post-baccalaureate one-year certificate programs

•    Two-year associate degree

•    Four-year bachelor’s degree

Many universities offer a BSc or MSc degree. While many medical colleges offer an MD in the subject. About 40 medical professionals are awarded MD/DNB degrees in nuclear medicine every year across various centers of learning.

For admission to the BSc programme, the candidate must have scored at least 50% marks at 10+2 level with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects and Biology or Mathematics as optional subjects. MBBS qualified candidates can apply for MD in this field.

For Bachelor Courses: Students can apply for bachelor courses (B.Sc in nuclear medicine technology) after passing 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.
For Master Courses: To apply for PG courses, (M.Sc in nuclear medicine technology) candidates should have completed a bachelor degree from any college or university recognized from MCI (Medical Council of India).
