Dairy technology is the study about milk and its product processing such as storage, packaging, distribution, filtration, transportation and other related technology by implying bacteriology, nutrition and biochemistry is called as dairy technology. Dairy Technology is based on four pillars such as technology, engineering, dairy microbiology and dairy management.
The study of how milk products like flavoured milk, curd, cheese, milk powder, ice creams, sweets, etc. are being processed, the environmental condition while making the dairy products, quality control along with the study of achieving maximum result with minimum wastage is included in dairy technology.
Dairy engineering is basically the study about how to set up a dairy plant and types of machinery used for maximum output. Milk and its products are perishable goods and the study about how to keep those food items for a long time by maintaining its taste and nutrition includes in dairy microbiology. Dairy management is the study of how a dairy plant can work effectively and the required management skills to achieve the goals.
After successful completion of the course, aspirants join as a trainee and with experience of work one gets promoted to higher levels. Although, the average salary of a dairy technologist as a fresher is Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. After a few years of experience, the salary goes up to Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000.
Scope of Dairy Technology:
Certainly, India is the highest milk producing country in the world. The dairy industry has contributed a lot in the social as well as economic development of India. There are more than almost 140 million litres of milk production per year in the country and around 180 dairy machine manufacturing companies in India. Therefore, it has an output of 750 dairy technologist per year which is very less based on the employment needs in the dairy industry. The demand for dairy technologist is higher than the supply of human resources which increases job opportunities after completion of the course compared to other sectors.
This course is designed for those who are interested in science as well as microbiology, variants of experiment and curiosity to know how something is engendered and its related technology should take this career option for their future growth as a result.
Above all, there is wide scope in this field as one can work in different roles such as a dairy plant supervisor or quality control officer, equipment maintenance manager and much more. Those who earn experience in this field can become a dairy consultant or a scientist in regulatory bodies like NDDB, NABARD, GCMMF, Ministry of Agriculture, FSSAI, etc., and likewise, may also work as a microbiologist or dairy medical officer.
